Developing Self-Character, Pursuing Academic Excellence, and Service to the Community...on the Journey to Manhood
Purpose of the Beautillion Program
A beautillion is a formal event designed for young men to teach social graces and necessary skills for success in life, and to become gentlemen. Delta Lambda hosts an annual beautillion for high school men from around the immediate area. The ultimate purpose is to create a holistic African American student.
Another purpose is to give scholarships and create a pool of college students that have been directly affected by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The scholarship money will be presented to those individuals who have committed themselves to the bi-monthly sessions and have been successful throughout the process.
This will be an opportunity for the chapter to become more involved in the community and to give substantial monies to deserving young men. The Beautillion program will also support the Black & Gold Ball of the Delta Lambda Foundation, Inc. and their families purchasing tickets.
Program Criteria
To be considered for admittance into the program, aspirants must have demonstrated leadership potential (i.e., academic, athletic, religious, etc.) and participation in extra-curricular activities. The aspirants will also have a thorough interview by the Beautillion Committee members reviewing their interest in public service and social and political change. The minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required.
Program Scheduling
Students will meet for thirteen (13) sessions on the first or third Saturdays of each month for 2 - 3 hours. Additional sessions may be scheduled during the week to augment the program or to provide an opportunity for the young men to take advantage of all available cultural and educational opportunities; including mandatory participation in a beautillion retreat.
Each Beau is expected to attend the scheduled seminars in order to be eligible for the Beau of the Year.
In 2003 Delta Lambda Chapter presented its inaugural "Beautillion" with eleven outstanding young men who were provided a year of concentrated personal development training. The chapter has graduated a beautillion class every year since.
